About Image Converter

This converter hands your file to the browser's own image decoder (createImageBitmap), draws the pixels on a canvas, and saves them again in the target format. PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF come out of the browser's built-in encoder (canvas.toBlob). BMP and ICO are not something browsers can write, so the tool assembles those files byte by byte itself. The practical consequence is that which files you can open depends on your browser, not on the tool.

Because conversion means unpacking to raw pixels and packing them again, anything that lived only in the original file โ€” EXIF data, the embedded colour profile, extra animation frames โ€” does not make it into the new one. The sections below cover the cases where that actually matters.

Why iPhone HEIC photos won't open

HEIC โ€” an HEIF container holding HEVC-compressed images โ€” is the default camera format on iPhones, and it is expensive to license. As of 2026 the only browsers that decode it are Safari 17 and later on macOS and iOS; Chrome, Edge and Firefox do not. Since this tool relies on the browser to decode, a HEIC dropped into Chrome on Windows gets a message saying this browser can't open HEIC instead of a conversion, while the same file in Safari on a Mac converts to JPG or PNG straight away.

Without Safari, the simplest fix is on the phone: Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats โ†’ Most Compatible makes future photos save as JPG. Photos you have already taken are usually converted to JPG when you share them out of the Photos app, so check what format actually arrived in your email or AirDrop folder before reaching for a converter.

Transparent areas turn white (or your chosen colour) when you convert PNG to JPG

JPEG has no alpha channel. When a transparent logo is saved as JPG, every transparent pixel has to become some solid colour, and left to itself the browser picks black. So when JPG is selected, this tool shows a JPG background colour (white by default), paints it first and composites the image on top before encoding. Soft shadows and anti-aliased edges blend into that colour, so for a logo that will sit on a dark page, set the background to match the page.

To keep transparency, choose PNG, WebP or AVIF; ICO and the tool's 32-bit BMP also carry alpha. With background removal on, a JPG fills the removed background with the same colour.

When colours look slightly off: colour profiles

Recent iPhones and Macs capture in Display P3, a wider gamut than sRGB, and embed an ICC profile that tells software how to interpret the numbers. A browser canvas draws in sRGB by default, so the converted image is squeezed into the sRGB range and carries no profile. Saturated reds and greens can look a touch duller as a result.

For web pages and chat apps, sRGB is the safe choice anyway. For print work, or anywhere the original colour must survive, export from a colour-managed editor instead.

BMP and ICO are built by the tool itself

BMP output is uncompressed 32-bit BGRA. Its size is width ร— height ร— 4 bytes plus a 54-byte header, regardless of what the picture shows. Use it when an old program or embedded device will only accept BMP โ€” never to save space.

ICO is a container that bundles several resolutions in one file. By default the tool includes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px, and Windows or the browser picks whichever fits. The format caps a single image at 256 px, so larger sources are scaled so the longer side is 256.

When background removal works, and when it doesn't

Background removal here is colour distance, not AI segmentation. The tool averages the four corners to estimate the background colour. Pixels within an RGB distance of the tolerance (40 by default) become fully transparent, and a softness band above that (24 by default) fades them in gradually. It works well on product shots against a plain wall or scans of stamps and signatures on flat paper.

If the subject contains the background colour โ€” a white shirt against a white wall โ€” holes appear there too. The defringe option subtracts the background colour's contribution from semi-transparent edge pixels, so a cut-out placed on a dark page shows less of a pale halo.

Worked examples

A 1920ร—1080 screenshot saved as BMP

Input
PNG 1920ร—1080 โ†’ BMP
Output
8,294,454 bytes (about 7.9 MB)

1920 ร— 1080 ร— 4 = 8,294,400 bytes of pixels, plus a 14-byte file header and a 40-byte info header. The PNG might be a few hundred KB; the BMP is this size every time.

Turning a logo into a favicon

Input
Transparent 1024ร—1024 PNG โ†’ ICO, sizes set to All
Output
One .ico holding six images: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px

Each size is redrawn from the original, so even the 16 px version keeps reasonably clean edges. The 1024 px original itself is not stored in the ICO.

Transparent PNG to JPG

Input
Logo PNG with a transparent background โ†’ JPG at 92%
Output
A JPG with a white background

JPEG cannot store transparency, so the transparent area is filled with the JPG background colour (white by default). Convert to WebP instead to keep it; at the same quality it is usually smaller than the PNG as well.

How to use it

  1. Drop one or more images.
  2. Pick the target format; set quality for JPG, WebP or AVIF, or the included sizes for ICO.
  3. Turn on background removal and adjust the tolerance if needed.
  4. Download each file, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't Chrome on Windows convert my HEIC file?

Chrome cannot decode HEIC. Open the tool in Safari 17+ on a Mac or iPhone, or switch the iPhone camera to Most Compatible so it shoots JPG.

AVIF is listed, but converting to it fails.

Displaying AVIF and encoding it are separate features. The tool checks whether the canvas can actually encode AVIF and reports an error if it cannot. Try a current Chromium-based browser.

I dropped in an animated GIF and got a single frame.

Only the first frame is drawn on the canvas, so animation is lost. For making or editing GIFs, use the video-to-GIF tool.

Why are SVG files rejected?

SVG is vector artwork, so it has to be rasterised at a chosen size, and browsers handle SVG on canvas inconsistently. The tool blocks it at upload rather than produce unpredictable output.

Does converting remove the date and location from a photo?

Yes. Only pixels are carried over, so EXIF (date, camera, GPS) and the colour profile are dropped.
