About Edit PDF Metadata
A PDF's title, author and keywords live in two places, not one: the older document information dictionary (Info) and an XML block of XMP metadata attached to the catalog. A PDF exported from Word and then touched by another program often ends up with different values in each, and the title you see depends on which one the viewer or search engine reads.
This tool shows the current values from both side by side and marks the fields that disagree. It rewrites Info with your values, updates only the fields it manages in the XMP packet to match, then reads the saved file back so you see what actually went in. The replaced Info dictionary and XMP stream are deleted from the file, so the old values aren't left hidden inside it.
Where each field goes and what it's for
Title is written to dc:title in XMP, Author to dc:creator, Subject to dc:description, and Keywords to both pdf:Keywords and dc:subject. Authors are split on semicolons, so a name written as “Smith, Jane” stays one person. Keywords split on commas or semicolons. Creator is the application that made the original; Producer is the engine that converted it to PDF.
Turning on DisplayDocTitle makes the viewer's window or tab show the title instead of a file name like final_v3_REALLY_final.pdf. If you enable it with an empty title, you may get a blank title bar, so set the two together. Custom properties such as Department or ProjectNo must start with a letter and use only letters, digits, underscore, dot and hyphen.
How dates and XMP are handled
PDF dates carry their UTC offset, as in D:20240301140500+09'00'. The tool keeps the wall-clock time and the offset separately, so a date doesn't drift by hours because of your browser's time zone. For the modified date you can stamp the save time, keep the original, or record nothing.
XMP defaults to Sync. The existing packet is kept and only fields such as title, author and dates are replaced, so other data like rights, IPTC or PDF/UA identification stays. The document ID is kept, a new instance ID is generated, and if the source declares itself PDF/A, that identification (pdfaid) is carried over. Keep leaves XMP untouched, so the two places may continue to disagree and the old author in XMP stays. Remove deletes XMP, which breaks conformance if the file is PDF/A.
Worked examples
A PDF with two different titles
- Input
Info title “Microsoft Word - draft.docx”, XMP title “2025 Logistics Proposal”; title changed to “2025 Smart Logistics Proposal” with XMP sync- Output
Info and XMP both read “2025 Smart Logistics Proposal”; 0 mismatches
Word's export put the file name into the title, and a later editor fixed only XMP. After syncing, every viewer shows the same title, and search engines that use the PDF title have one consistent value to pick up.
How to use it
- Add the PDF; Info and XMP values appear side by side, with mismatches marked.
- Edit the title, author and other fields, then set dates, XMP handling and custom properties.
- Save and check the result under “Values read back from the saved file”.
Frequently asked questions
If I clear the author, is my name gone from the file?
With XMP set to Sync or Remove, the author fields in Info and XMP are cleared and the objects that held the old values are deleted from the file. With Keep, the author in XMP stays. Your name may also appear elsewhere, in the page text, comments or attachments, and this tool doesn't change those.
Can I change the Producer?
Yes, but some PDF software overwrites Producer with its own name whenever it saves the file again.
Does changing the title rename the file?
No. The file name belongs to the operating system; the title is a value inside the PDF. The viewer shows the title instead of the file name only when DisplayDocTitle is on.
Notes
How the trailer points to the Info dictionary and the catalog points to XMP is covered in the guide “How PDF Files Work”.
